- [the new p0f]
P0f v2 is a versatile passive OS fingerprinting tool. P0f can identify the operating system on: - machines that connect to your box (SYN mode),- machines you connect to (SYN+ACK mode), - machine you cannot connect to (RST+ mode), - machines whose communications you can observe. P0f can also do many other tricks, and can detect or measure the following: - firewall presence or masquerading (useful for policy enforcement), - the distance to the remote system and its uptime, - other guy's network hookup (DSL, OC3, avian carriers) and his ISP. All this even when the device in question is behind an overzealous packet firewall, when our favourite active scanner can't do much. P0f does not generate ANY additional network traffic, direct or indirect. No name look...

- Anatomy of Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux)
Linux has been described as one of the most secure operating systems available, but the National Security Agency (NSA) has taken Linux to the next level with the introduction of Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux). SELinux takes the existing GNU/Linux operating system and extends it with kernel and user-space modifications to make it bullet-proof. If you're running a 2.6 kernel today, you might be surprised to know that you're using SELinux right now! This article explores the ideas behind SELinux and how it's implemented.

- Hacking openSUSE 10.2 - Software in Review
Novell's openSUSE 10.2 is an exciting desktop operating environment that includes or supports nearly every program you need for work and play. But there are those last few programs and issues that make openSUSE just short of perfect. Web browser plugins for some kinds of online content; MP3, Windows Media, and DVD movie playback support; and drivers for Atheros wireless devices and Nvidia and ATI video cards are the chief things holding openSUSE back for some users. This guide will help you remove as many of those barriers as possible.

- MirOS/MirPorts: a wonderful operating system for a world of peace
MirOS BSD is a secure operating system from the BSD family for 32-bit i386 and sparc systems. It is based on 4.4BSD-Lite (mostly OpenBSD, some NetBSD®). The MirPorts Framework is a portable ports tree to facilitate the installation of additional software. The project also releases some portable software: mksh, a pdksh-based shell; PaxMirabilis, an archiver for various formats; MirMake, a framework for building software; MirNroff, an AT&T nroff based man page (and text document) formatter; MirCksum, a flexible checksumming and hash generation tool; and some more.

- pfSense » Introduction
pfSense is a open source firewall derived from the m0n0wall operating system platform with radically different goals such as using OpenBSD's ported Packet Filter, FreeBSD 6.1 ALTQ (HFSC) for excellent packet queueing and finally an integrated package management system for extending the environment with new features. As with the software itself, this website is still a work in progress, but we're actively working on improving and completing it.

- PoolMon
PoolMon (poolmon.exe), the Memory Pool Monitor, displays data that the operating system collects about memory allocations from the system paged and nonpaged kernel pools, and the memory pools used for Terminal Services sessions. The data is grouped by pool allocation tag.Driver developers and testers often use PoolMon to detect memory leaks when they create a new driver, change the driver code, or stress the driver. You can also use PoolMon in each stage of testing to view the driver's patterns of allocation and free operations, and to reveal how much pool memory the driver is using at any given time. The version of PoolMon described in this document is included in the Windows DDK.

- The Contiki Operating System - Home
Contiki is an open source, highly portable, multi-tasking operating system for networked memory-constrained networked embedded systems. A typical Contiki configuration is 2 kilobytes of RAM and 40 kilobytes of ROM. Contiki contains two communication stacks: uIP and Rime. uIP is a small RFC-compliant TCP/IP stack that makes it possible for Contiki to communicate over the Internet. Rime is a lightweight communication stack designed for low-power radios that provides a wide range of communication primitives and protocols, such as multi-hop data collection, multi-hop unicast mesh routing, and reliable multi-hop network flooding. Contiki consists of an event-driven kernel on top of which application programs are dynamically loaded and unloaded at runtime. Con...

A typical Contiki configuration is 2 kilobytes of RAM and 40 kilobytes of ROM. Contiki consists of an event-driven kernel on top of which application programs are dynamically loaded and unloaded at runtime. Contiki processes use light-weight protothreads that provide a linear, thread-like programming style on top of the event-driven kernel. Contiki also supports per-process optional preemptive multi-threading, interprocess communication using message passing through events, as well as an optional GUI subsystem with either direct graphic support for locally conn...

Phantom operating systemPhantom is a very simple system. From the programmer's point of view Phantom is just a big graph of objects, and these objects never die. OS ensures that all the memory contents are sound and safe, even if power's going down. It is not guaranteed that the very last state of memory is saved (though it can be achieved), but it IS guaranteed that saved memory snap is consistent – all the objects are snapped at the same 'personal' timescale moment. Physically, of course, snapshot is being done quite slowly, to not to disturb user with high disk IO activity.
