- All about Linux: strace - A very powerful troubleshooting tool for all Linux users
strace - A very powerful troubleshooting tool for all Linux users Many times I have come across seemingly hopeless situations where a program when compiled and installed in GNU/Linux just fails to run. In such situations after I have tried every trick in the book like searching on the net and posting questions to Linux forums, and still failed to resolve the problem, I turn to the last resort which is trace the output of the misbehaving program. Tracing the output of a program throws up a lot of data which is not usually available when the program is run normally. And in many instances, sifting through this volume of data has proved fruitful in pin pointing the cause of error.

- KDE::Enterprise Homepage -
Allowing users to override system settings is not always desirable. To keep administration headaches to a minimum, many corporate IT departments define a standard system configuration, and lock down systems so users can't alter set policies. Traditional UNIX-style file permissions are one tool for locking down a Linux desktop, but support is still required from the applications to prevent users from affecting and using local configurations.KDE provides support for policy-controlled configurations via the KDE kiosk framework, which debuted in KDE 3.0. Work on the kiosk framework was originally inspired by the requirements of public access terminals, where locking down the system is mandatory. While adapting KDE for kiosks, it was quickly realized that...

- Mail merge in OpenOffice.org
The office where I am network administrator switched most users to OpenOffice.org (OOo) back at version 1.1, and has followed the upgrade process to the current version 2.3 (a few poor users who have to exchange documents outside the office with high fidelity are still clinging to their MS Office 97). Our receptionist does a lot of general secretarial duties, including lots of letters, envelopes, and labels that involve mail merge. Since this seems to be a sticking point for many people, I am putting everything I have learned from helping her and have gleaned from various sources on the Internet together in this tutorial.

- Saving power with Linux on Intel hardware
Power usage is a hot topic for computer users everywhere. For some, it's a matter of how long a laptop lasts without being plugged in. For others, it's controlling the temperature of hundreds of systems within a datacenter. For all of us, it's about keeping the electricity bill under control and being kind to the environment. Getting your computer to use the least amount of power can be problematic. This site provides information on reducing power usage, tips, and tricks for Intel-based computers running Linux*. As a first step, Intel is releasing PowerTOP, a tool that helps you find what software is using the most power. By fixing (or closing) these applications or processes, you can immediately see the power savings in the tool. You'll also see the est...
