'The Mother Of All Demos' Turns 40 It's been exactly 40 years since a man, one of the greatest visionaries in the world of computing, showed a crowd things that they really, really didn't understand. The visionary showed things you could do with a computer that we can still barely do today. He was the first to show windows, a mouse, video conferencing, document collaboration, email, instant messaging, hypertext linking, and so much more. Yes, yesterday was the 40th anniversary of what would become known as The Mother Of All Demos. Please pay your respects. in Public bookmarkswith computingexactlygreatestmanshowedvisionariesworldyears
eBCVG - Automated Penetration Testing - False Sense of Security The security industry has matured quickly over the past few years with penetration testing becoming one of the norms for organisations adopting best-practice processes. Loosely defined as the process of actively assessing an organisations security measures and completely reliant on consultancy services, security manufacturers have been eager to bridge the gap between product and service and more importantly to reap the benefits of additional profits in Public bookmarkswith securityindustrymaturedpastyearspenetrationtestingbecoming
GeeXboX HomePage Here we finally are ... after more than 3 years of perpetual development, GeeXboX finally reaches its so long awaited 1.0 release. Many of you were waiting for it and this is probably the best edition of GeeXboX that you've ever had. We've spent so much time in the last few months to fix all the bugs that we can, so that you'll be forced to enjoy it ;-) At the time Aurel and myself started working on GeeXboX, none of us would have expected our software to become that famous. I'm really glad that this version finally came out and I really really want to thank from the depths of my heart all the people of our development team who are getting involved in GeeXboX everyday. None of this would ever have been possible without the work you've all done on it. I'd... Linux OCR: A review of free optical character recognition software | groundstate I've used Linux as my full-time desktop for seven years now. I have almost no reason to use Windows (other than stupid ExamSoft), and even when I do, I don't have much Windows software available. The one "hole" in my workflow has been OCR. For years, people have been able to scan a document and have it converted into real text. One of my old printers even came with OCR software included - for Windows of course. But when I've really needed OCR, I've just assumed that there were no high quality packages available for Linux. Recently I decided to find out for myself (a complete OCR virgin) what is available, how to use it, and what the results are like. I installed every free OCR package I could find, and systematically tested them. They all work very diffe... in Public bookmarkswith desktopfull-timelinuxreasonsevenstupidwindowsyearsby 2 users
Parallel Virtual File System, Version 2 Parallel I/O continues to be a topic of active development. Recent years have seen the creation of many new options. Even with these new choices, certain factors remain constant. Parallel applications need a fast I/O subsystem. Clusters need a parallel file system that can scale as the number of nodes increases to the thousands and tens of thousands. PVFS2 is our answer. Many institutions and researchers have used the first generation of the Parallel Virtual File System (PVFS) with much success. The time has come for the second generation. PVFS2 continues to serve as both a platform for parallel I/O research as well as a production file system for the cluster computing community. in Public bookmarkswith parallelcontinuestopicactivedevelopmentrecentyearscreation
Stupid Computer Tricks These images are the result of 8 years in the retail computer industry - 8 years that are thankfully behind me. I used to work in the service department in a retail store of a very famous computer company (think cows...). During this time, I was able to observe (and preserve for posterity) the aftereffects of the - shall we say - "technology challenged" folks. My friends and relatives couldn't believe the stories I told - thus this collection of photos. in Public bookmarkswith imagesresultyearsretailcomputerindustrythankfullyworkby 3 users
