When the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society&#39;s HCI Standards Committee(of which I am a member) was working on this issue, we agreed that itdepended on the task.  If the user is likely to be scanning down lookingfor a specific field, left alignment can be helpful because it&#39;s easier tofind the fields.  If the user is likely to be familiar with the form andentering data field by field, right alignment is helpful because it&#39;seasier to recognize which label goes with the field of interest.Both ISO 9241-12 and HFES-200 say that labels should be right aligned ifthey are of widely varying lengths and that they may be left aligned ifthey are of similar length.
