Apple - Support - Discussions - Why has my Mac mini become so slow? ...

In a word, it comes down to lag. Every operation which used to be instant when the Mac was new, now has a delay of anything from half a second to over 10 seconds. It feels like walking in mud. And it's always the first time I do something I haven't done for a few minutes -- if I repeat the same operation immediately afterwards, it's instant. Long delays are often (but not always) accompanied by the beachball -- which I see a lot.

Famously, when Twitter's Web2.0rhea app was suddenly embraced by digerati+dog in late in 2007, its original Ruby on Rails architecture had more than a little trouble keeping up the endless stream of digital solipsism. But in mid-2008, the web's startup-of-the-moment quietly ported some of its core code to Scala, and according to Twitter developer Alex Payne, the switch should stand as a lesson to cutting-edge coders everywhere.

In recent research, WatchMouse found that many of the world's largest online social networks have poor site performance, leaving users waiting for sites to load or encountering errors. Of the 104 sites monitored, the immensely popular Facebook (facebook.com) site was the worst performer; recording a slow load time and more errors than any other monitored site.
